FEAR
What keeps people away from being successful? The biggest reason behind it is fear…
Yes, it’s a Terror of fear.
Yes, it’s a Horror of fear.
What happens in fear?
In Hindi we say, “Jo Dar Gaya Vo Mar Gaya” & I say “Vo Jeet Gaya Jo Himmat Dikha Gaya.”
Fear of public speaking is called as Glossophobia. Public speaking is in domain of social anxiety disorder.
Fear of Public speaking is number one among societies population. Out of all phobias it is considered the highest.
As per my personal experience, in a class of 100 I believe 70 students have this fear of public speaking.
My observation:
When I am asking questions to students for better engagement, only 5-6 students interact actively. So that, Teacher know point of view of those students only. Few will ask queries personally. Babita, Sunita, Chitra with brilliant talent couldn’t top, never achieved university rank. Chandni couldn’t speak in viva. Few wrote paper well but never presented in class. Names are endless…
During oral test and paper checking I could access many students for asking reasons to be quiet in spite of such a brilliant performance and talent within. Guess what? They are gripped with fears and phobias.
I puzzled why do they would like to be same from 1st year to 4th year?
Why we remain in same zone….
Few students approach and said, “We were thinking to come since 2 -3 years… but……” (Since years we think only & not act?)
What is this but…?
Why we keep on remaining in same zone for years?
Why we keep on thinking for working on our blocks of performances?
Why are we not taking action?
By ruminating about working on fears will not give result. Right actions produce right results. *1
Let’s explore scientific and philosophical answer.
THOSE WHO BREAK BARRIERS MAKE HISTORY.
In class the boy ABC was asked to speak his name and he tremble and voice fumbled, he feared public speaking. So, he started avoiding conversations, lectures etc. Every opportunity slipped out of hands. Somewhere within he knew he can and by being courageous he will participate to drop down in last minute. He finished graduation and had only two choices left that either face fear & tap his potential or avoid fear and waste potential. He enrolled his name in Dale Carnegie’s public speaking classes at 21 years of age and surprised to find many in the class.
Here student ABC is Warren Buffet, who is one of the richest persons in world. His worth is more than 65 billion.
Would he achieve this if he would have avoided his fears?
What he did to overcome it?
Decide and act. Taking help where one has limitations.
Learning: Face your fears. Take action.
Avoidance is failure. Below your fears, there is immense potential.
He expressed in an interview with Levo Leage, “It’s so much easier to learn the right habits when you’re young. If you have a fear of associating with people, you have to go out there and do it, and it’s painful…, you have to do it. And the sooner you do it, the better it is.”
Similar story goes with Gandhiji, until faced humiliation at South Africa he was timid & fearful. He was as a child had frequent panic attacks. In London, he could not utter a line after initial address and gave away papers to someone to read. The ignited passion gave him strength to stand for himself and country.
Would he be mahatma if remained in his cocoon for life time?
Learning: come out of cocoon. Come out of comfort zone. Discover passion.Passion gives strength.
If someone can do it you can learn to do it.
There is a leader with in you. What you are waiting for?
What happens in fear? Let’s see its scientific side
Survival is the basic instinct of not only humans but for all lives. Our brain wired in that way. Evolutionary learning is saved in our brain and it is wired in that way. First response is instinctual and survival based. So we have Fight-Flight-Freeze response. It is an automatic phenomenon governed by autonomic nervous system. This is the basic reaction we give, when we face challenge or threat. It is genetic & by birth. There is a very short circuit pathway in brain. This is immature and basic response.
Now by learning and education with over a period of time, we derive knowledge and sense of right & wrong. It is Wisdom and knowledge. So cortex area of brain is involved whose function is thinking. We learn to give mature and thoughtful response by training this part of mind-brain response. It is longer route circuit.
According to survival and evolutionary theory and all scientific experiments it is concluded that stress response, fight, flight, freeze response is natural and immediate. So we experience trembling, shaking voice, coldness of extremities, perspiration, palpitations, blurry vision and many more.
In our brain there are areas for different functions. So, we have emotional brain and logical brain. We have stress response and peace response.
Our hidden background fears and beliefs create a brain biochemistry to react in this way and leads to chain of fear and failure.
Let’s see side of psychology.
“Everything you want is on the other-side of fear”
Subconscious part of our mind has lot of role to play.
How is our developmental belief system? What references works for our actions?
These experiences make every individual story of nervousness different and individual.
Common fear behind social anxiety and stage fear and nervous attacks are listed below
- What people will think about me? Fear of public /social image.
- What if they laugh at me? Fear of being ridicule/ mocked at/ laughed at
- What if my lack of knowledge is exposed? Fear of being exposed of own ignorance/ incapability.
- What if I am rejected
- Fear of being rejected.
- What if I will fail
- Fear of failure.
- What if I will succeed and get next task. How will I handle it? Fear of success.
How does such deep rooted fear developed? There is a process.
To conclude now, scientifically law of least resistance and psychologically tendency to regress primitive level of development keep us in comfort zone. Good news is we have antidote of everything.
We can learn and train our mind and brain to give peace response by taking longer route. Since its longer route initially resistance comes. When you experienced once you will identify it’s so easy to do so.
With our specially designed modules at Samanvay Setu, by blending of best available techniques of HYPOTHERAPY, REBT, NLP, YOGA… and wisdom of eastern philosophy. We can reroute this panic response to peace response. We can rewire brain for success.
We can re-design belief and change our destiny.
Don’t’ wait. Take action. Book an appointment. Choose to write your own destiny.
